Subject: Epiphany Invitational results From: John Medinger Date: Sat, 3 Aug 2002 18:55:29 -0700 (PDT) The show must go on. The careful reader of this list will know that the Epiphany Ultras, one of those mile-a-year (or km-a-year) birthday runs, is normally scheduled on a Saturday in early January, to correspond with this writer's birthday. In recent years, more than 100 folks have shown up to run all or part. Well, this year, yours truly had knee surgery on Jan. 3. Not a big deal procedure, arthroscopic, a little meniscus, a little plica. But still. So, a lengthy rehab followed and then a slow return (empahsis on the slow, alas) to the trails. Real training began in May (empahsis still on "slow") and by now, it seemed time to test the progress. So, earlier today, by best bud Errol "Rocket" Jones and I went out for the Real Deal, 51.6 miles (actually 52), a mile a year to date. It wasn't exactly pretty, but it could have been so much worse. Much of the run is on the Firetrails 50 course in the Oakland hills, fairly hilly fire roads. Results, a two-way tie for first. Or a two-way tie for last, depending on your perspective. Errol "Rocket" Jones, 9:30:58 Tropical John Medinger, 9:30:58 Thanks much to Dapper Don James, who ran the first half with us, and to Lee Remick and Bill White who showed up at various spots with aid. Barring unforseen difficulties of a similar magnitude, the show will be back on again next January, Saturday, Jan. 11 to be more precise. Details to follow in due course. aloha, Tropical John PS the knee held up just fine (better than some of the rest of my body!)
