Starting List and Waiting List for the 2003 Hardrock Hundred

The 2002 Hardrock Hundred was cancelled, due to the extreme fire danger in the San Juans. Entrants in the 2002 run were given the opportunity to roll over their entries to 2003. Most chose to do so. No new entries were accepted for the 2003 run.

Entry policy for the 2004 run is still under discussion. We hope to announce the policy immediately after the 2003 run.

The Hardrock Hundred selection committee met for six hours on Saturday, February 9, 2002 to make the selection and develop the waiting list for the 2002 run. 213 runners submitted applications, of which 185 were considered qualified. These 185 included a small number of runners not meeting the formal qualification of having completed a mountainous hundred in 2000 or 2001, typically by having completed some other run in those years that the committee felt was of equivalent difficulty. Our quota of 110 runners was filled by the following algorithm:

  1. 38 runners were accepted for having finished two or more Hardrocks in the past five years. We had originally planned to accept 55 runners in order decreasing number of Hardrock finishes in the past five years, but since there were an additional 39 runners who had finished one, we drew the line at two.

  2. 3 runners were accepted for having finished in the top-10 in last year, but who were not already included in the 38 above.

  3. 8 runners were accepted for past service to the Hardrock Hundred.

  4. 31 runners were selected by lottery from the 67 remaining runners who had ever started a Hardrock (including the "once in the past five years" finishers).

  5. The remaining 30 runners were selected by lottery from the 105 remaining qualified runners (including those not selected in the first lottery - they effectively got two chances).

  6. The remaining 75 runners were ordered on the waiting list by lottery.

As runners on the "starting" list withdraw, we will keep it at 110 by moving runners in order from the waiting list. Judging by attrition rates in years past, the top-10 on the waiting list will almost certainly get to start on race day, and the next 10 have a very good chance. If you have been accepted and choose not to run, please let RD Dale Garland know ASAP, so that someone else can begin preparing for the run.

This was the fairest system we could come up with that 1) rewarded long-time participants, 2) gave first-time applicants a fighting chance, and 3) minimized elitism and cronyism. It was a difficult selection - some of our closest friends ended up far down the waiting list. Comments and suggestions for the 2003 selection process will be gratefully accepted. Send them to Charlie Thorn.

Runners who wish to withdraw from the waiting list can have their check returned to them by contacting Dale Garland. Refunds for runners among the lucky 110 will be subject to the late refund penalties detailed on the entry form. This includes runners who move to the "starting" list from the waiting list. Runners still on the waiting list on July 1, 2003 will have their checks returned to them, unless they request otherwise - it is possible that an accepted runner may not show up on race day, in which case we will give a starting slot to the lowest runner on the waiting list who is present that morning.
