The USU Bylaws provide only for equitable distribution of funds to the athletes and certain support personnel. In other words, any donations go into the "pot" (of green) and, after the stated deadline for that year, the pot is distributed equally among the athletes and team support personnel as specified by the bylaws. That means that contributors can't, for instance, tell us to give their donation to one individual, or use it for certain purposes. As a 501(c)(3), we must abide by our bylaws (else we'll get in lots of trouble with Uncle Sam and lose out tax exempt status and all that sort of stuff). Here's the section from the bylaws that determines how the money is distributed: **************************************** SECTION 1. OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES The primary objectives and purposes of this corporation shall be: (a) Funding of the ultradistance team that represents the United States each year at the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Challenge 100K. (b) To allocate funds equally among the athletes who comprise the United States Ultradistance Team. Alternates will be funded only if they are officially named to the team. In addition to the athletes, funds will be distributed to one women's team manager, one men's team manager, one team coordinator and one appropriately qualified team physician. Any other support staff will be funded at the discretion of the twelve athletes, women's team manager, men's team manager, team physician, and team coordinator. Funding shall be up to the level of expenses incurred while participating in the event. (c) To provide additional team funding to be used as needed by the athletes and for purposes deemed appropriate to team support and acceptable by the Board of Directors. *************************************** If you would like a complete copy of the USU Fund By-Laws please feel free to contact: Renée Despres (Secretary) HC 68 Box 79D Silver City, NM 88061 Ph (505) 536-3230 Fax (505) 536-3231 rtdespres@aol.com ********************************* 7/12/01
