At least the weather was nice and the trail was in great shape. The runners seemed to have a good time despite a much-needed aid station being moved 2 miles further down the trail. Laura Kulsik ran off with both the Women's Course Record and The Women's Master's Record. On the relay side, however, the "old guys", Brent Backus and Herb Tanzer, held onto their fast time of the year before. Even noRm managed to hold onto his 60-69 year old male title despite being unable to run this year due to too many visits to the feeding trough. As for the RD, let's just say it was a learning year. Here are a few of the lessons learned (experienced race directors will no doubt be shaking their heads and smiling): Lesson #1: When dealing with ANY state governmental agency, always contact them several times prior to race day to remind them of the event, especially if they are supposed to change the combination to a lock on the access gate to an aid station. Lesson #2 When dealing with ANY local governmental agency, always check to see that the key they give you to the restrooms at the start actually FITS the locks on the restrooms. Lesson #3 When new aid station personel (bless their hearts, we couldn't do this without them!) tell you, "Yeah, I know where the trail is, no problem.", make sure they know EXACTLY where the trail is so that they don't tell the front runner to turn around at the half-way point and GO BACK on a loop course (sorry again, Luis - you're a real good sport and I owe you one big time!). Lesson #4 It's the little things that count - like CAN OPENERS at the barbeque. Of course, a screw driver does work...Thanks noRm. Lesson #5 NEVER!!! forget Murphey's Law and have a backup plan, especially when it comes to the timing device you're using for the event, because when water comes into contact with sensitive electronics...Thanks Andy for your wrist watch! Lesson #6 The key to any ultra, whether you're running it or RDing it, is patience! Roll with the punches and have as much fun as you can, because you can't control all of the variables (except, of course, the ones listed above). Lesson#7 The most important lesson of all...that I need to be grateful to all of the people who helped make this event work and to the runners for showing up and making it successful. Thanks again. Hope to see you next year! RD Russ Bravard 6/20/01
