Subject: That Dam 50K results

The inaugural Dam 50K was run under warm and partly cloudy skies on
Saturday June 13. This two-loop 50K run starts and finishes at the 
scenic Auburn Dam Overlook in Auburn CA. For many this was the first 
opportunity to get in some heat training prior to the Western States 100 
Mile Run coming up in two weeks. Congratulations to Tom Lyons and Rena 
Schumann for their wins in the solo division. Paul and James 
Bonnett-Castillo running as one of two father and son teams won the 
male/male relay division. As an interesting side line James is 11 years 
old and definitely held his own against many fit and seasoned 
ultrarunners by pulling strong on the uphills. Kathy Raterman and Laura 
Kulsik came away with a win in the female/female relay division and Brad 
Lael and Michele Winowiecki won the male/female division. Brad 
converted his very fast road legs (he won the San Francisco Marathon a 
few years ago) to the trails and posted the fastest single loop time of 
the day. Marvin Johnson who ran with his son Tom was the oldest male 
competitor at 67 years young and the forever young Helen Klein topped 
out the age categories in the solo division at 75. 
 
To add to the festivities coffee and pancakes were served during 
registration and hot dogs hamburgers drinks chips and soup were 
served at the finish. The awards featuring artwork by Lucinda Fisher 
represented the event beautifully. 
 
Thanks to some very special volunteers who without their time and 
efforts events like this would never happen: Royce Zumwalt and Stan 
Jensen who helped with virtually everything from start to finish; Tim 
Twietmeyer at registration; Donna Dike and Crew who ran the aid station 
in Cool; Mary Scangarella, Marvin and Rosemarie Johnson and Gail 
Gutterman at the finish line. Several runners and observers stepped in 
to help out including Nancy March, Rena Schumann and Roger Dike at the 
Overlook Aid Station. A very special thanks to all of them.
