Epiphany Ultra by John Medinger The 26th Epiphany Ultra, a annual celebration of your correspondent's birthday, is conducted in true Fat Ass 50 fashion. There are no rules and runners are allowed to pretty much do anything that they want. The promised huge storm held off until late afternoon when most (but not all!) were done. Despite this, after two weeks of near-continuous rain, the run was a huge mudfest. As this was my 54th birthday, several decided to run 54km and a couple of stellar folks did 54 miles. 26 miles was a convenient distance as it resulted in being back at one's car; given the very sloppy footing, many decided that this was enough. Although we normally don’t give recognition to those who run less than an ultra distance, special mention goes to my pal “Donwhill” Bill White, who is in the Coast Guard and stationed at Fort Clarence, 70 miles north of Nome, Alaska. As the high temperature there on the day of the run was 6 below zero (with 40 below wind chill) he ran 13 miles on a treadmill to be a part of the celebration. Oakland, CA, January 8, 2005.
