It was just after dawn that the small scurry of runners forged into the misty conditions under a dark tree cover. One hapless victim twisted an ankle in the darkness, and unfortunately had to retire after about a third of the distance. The course is hilly and challenging in the best of conditions, so the participants have to take extra credit for their fortitude. The prescribed course offered alternative paths at various points, but total distance was a wash for the different routes, so there were no penalties for being off course. The Santa Cruz mountains and the resplendent redwood forests are good places to run anytime, and this year was no exception.
