Date: Mon, 22 Jul 1996 14:27:02 -0700 From: combs@broadvision.com (Dave Combs) To: ius-l@AMERICAN.EDU Subject: Bay Area Ultrarunners 24 Hour - preliminary results Cc: ultra@caligari.Dartmouth.EDU After finally getting a decent night's rest last night, I thought I'd send in a quick note with the VERY preliminary totals for the Jim Skophammer/BAUR 24 Hour held last weekend (I need to verify the totals by hand against the lap sheets, and given a few problems we had with the computers, some of these totals may be off by a lap or two. My sincere apologies for that, and believe me, I'm working on the problem!) Anyway, the quick summary: * HOT, HOT, HOT! (94 in the shade at the start, probably 115 on the track.) We didn't have any serious casualties, but we went through probably 40 bags of ice. * Mark Williams (he of Barkley fame, and I can see now why he could subdue Barkley--a powerful runner and a VERY strong, long-legged walker) came from well behind to win, though he was hanging on at the end as two women were cutting into his lead and the heat was returning Sunday morning. And no, Mark, I won't reject your entry for next year! :-) * We had a woman (in fact two) leading the race for the first time in its 13-year history. They kept the lead, and had an exciting duel with only a lap or two separating them, for much of the night. This is only the third(?) time we've had a woman over 115 miles, and we almost had two. * There were too many runners for the lap counters early on. Once a few people dropped out, things were much easier. * We had people from North Carolina to Colorado to southern California to the Bay Area. * We had at least one racewalker * For the second year in a row, we had three men in the 70+ division, and a local runner who will turn 85 later this year is considering coming to run next year. I guess 70+ isn't a high enough division, we need an 80+! * The performances, especially considering the heat, were REALLY outstanding!
