Denotes course record 154 starters Ridgecrest, Ca. December 7, 1997 Sorry I'm so late folks. An other edition of the Over The Hill Track Clubs High Desert 50k Ultra/Relay is over and it was truly a great day for Ultra running. We had 188 entered this year, 154 Ultra runners, 10 relay teams and 18 no shows. Finishers this year totaled 150 with 4 DNF's. They came from Utah, Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada, Northern California, Southern California and from little old Ridgecrest. El Nino came by as well and dropped rain and a light dusting of snow when we were marking the course the day before the race. Race day the weather gods were good to us and gave us a window of extremely good weather to run in. Overcast skies, some wind on the high ridges but no rain. Among the entrants this year we were surprised to see in our entries some big name athletes. Got the mail one day, went through the letters addressed to the OTHTC. One had P. Newby-Fraser, opened the envelope and indeed it was Paula, tri-athlete of the Hawaii Ironman fame. Watched her on ABC many a time, and saw an exceptional competitor win it year after year, a truly tough women. A long with her entry were two other entries, Kenny Souza, a tri-athlete of fame in his won right, and Paul Huddle (silver buckle at States) quite the tri-athlete also. Paula and Kenny were coming here to Ridgecrest to give the Ultra running scene a shot. This was going to be a good year for our event. Last years winner Brandon Sybrowsky, arrived at the start, along with many a veteran and newbies to our course. After a prayer for all our runners, the start. Arriving 3:40:08 after the start was Brandon, returning to win again, off of last years time of 3:24 and off the course record of 3:22, owned by Rod McNair, injured I heard. Brandon toughed it out having just ran an Ultra two weeks or a week before our race. Chasing Brandon and finishing close behind was Stephen Harris in at 3:45:42 and right on his heels was Kenny Souza with a 3:46:22 for his first Ultra. The top ten had the familiar names often seen in results either placing or winning races. They were, perennial winner Gabriel Flores, record holder of Badly Peaks, top masters winner/RD, Bill Kissell and Mark Marcelli. All top dogs in any race. For the women it was a new course record, with Paula Newby-Fraser, finishing in 8th place, coming in with a time of 4:06:24. Besting the 4:13 course record set by Lorraine Gersitz, in 1995 at age 41. Behind Paula was one of our own Ridgecrest Ultra runners Kathy Watkins, with a much improved time on this course, coming in with a fine time of 4:23:30, fourth fastest women's time ever. The next three women were battling it out and came in 4:50:16, Deirdre Williams, 4:50:22, Ronnie Wilde and 4:52:14 and Elaina McMahon, last years women winner. In the youngster dept. we had one entrant, Cameron Wilson, 19, running a exceptional race, coming in with a 4:22:40. In the age group where I just want to be able to still be running, there was also a runners time of note. Larry Dervin ran the fastest time recorded for age 60 and over, 4:53:45. This year we did have a couple of seniors finish. John Lodarski, 70 and Margie Withrow, 71. For those placing for age group awards, some battles were being waged as well. Though times were a little slower than last years race, some fine times were recorded this year. As we all know these events would not have a start or finish if it weren't for the great help and support of volunteers and sponsors. Thanks are in order to Mr. Karl King for supplying his Suceed caps, used by runners far and wide. Hope our entrants tried them or read the flyers and will decide to give them a try. They really do work. I mentioned sponsorship in the first post to the lists but failed to include Karl's caps (sorry Karl). A few major sponsors helped again as well as local business. Patagonia being a contributor again and Pepsi, their first time with us this year. Especially nice was a couple of one year subscriptions donated by Ultrarunning Magazine. Indian Wells Valley water donated the water for all our aid stations this year. Many thanks to all, for their support. Volunteers, what can I say about these folks, they are like gifts to us who like to run the trails. You give them a call, they come and they give of their time and energy, year after year. Last but not least, thanks to my wife Debbie, she helps me in every aspect of this race, she's wonderful and giving. I am very thank full and grateful to all of them, always. See you all next year, Chris L. Rios Race Director OTHTC, High Desert 50k/Relay
