More info later. John Metz ========================================================================== Race Summary: The weather was ideal this year for the race. Partly cloudy on Saturday during the day, some clouds at night, and not cold, and sun for the last 2 hours of the race. Temps ranged from the low 70's during the afternoon to low 50's late at night, and there was a nice cooling breeze from time to time during the day. The 12 and 24 hour runners started together, the 12 hour event was new this year. Early in the race Mike Trevino and Karl Meltzer were zipping around the track at a strong 7 min/mi pace, and racking up lots of miles. For the women, Lora Zagnoli went out quickly, and led Sue Olsen and Lynne Werner by a few miles after 4 hours. At the halfway point, Sue was having problems with a sore hamstring and stopped for good, while Lynne continued on for another 3 hours or so before she too stopped. At the half point, Mike Trevino led by almost 10 miles, with Scott Eppelman in 2nd, Karl Meltzer in 3rd, and myself in 4th (71.8, 71.1, and 70.4 miles respectively). Karl had been mostly walking since hour 10, and stopped for good at the 12 hour point. During the night Scott and I had a good competition, encouraging each other to "keep running" and walked a lap here or there together when our walk breaks coincided. Mike continued to run pretty well although he did more walking than he had during the first 12 hours. Until about 18 hours we all thought he had a shot at 150 miles, and he said that was his goal going into the race. He did slow towards morning and had no one close in the standings to keep up the motivation for the 150 mile goal. Mike did run strong the last hour or so, to reach a sub-goal of 144 miles, or 10 miles over Kurt Madden's event record from the first year of the race (1999). Mike has had quite a year running ultras here in California, winning several races here in San Diego (Smuggler's 50 miler in March, Lost Boys 50 miler in May, Cuyamaca-Laguna 50km in October), and the Badwater 135 mile race last July. The race for the women stayed pretty close during the night. Angela Brunson took over the lead from Lynne by 14 hours, and ran a lot the last few hours, intending originally to stop at 100 miles (which she reached in a little over 22 hours). The top 3 women all stayed on the track all night, and were very steady. Lisa Conover from Wisconsin, who has run a number of ultras here in Southern California this year, was very pleased with her run and placing. Maureen Moran was also happy to run well, and finished with over 100 miles, the 2nd woman (the other is Catra Corbett, who was running a trail race this last weekend) to surpass 100 miles twice during the 3 year history of the race. In the centurion walk race, three entrants reached the 100 mile mark, and the competiton was close. Eric Poulsen led Dale Sutton by maybe a mile or two at the halfway point, and Dale took the lead a little before sunrise. Patrick Bivona made his goal of becoming a centurion, walking the 100 miles in a split of about 23:48. Last year he completed 99.81 miles. In the 12 hour race, Scott Lyle led the early hours, with Matthias Schoeck and Jay Anderson in 2nd/3rd not far behind. Scott slowed by hour 7, and Matthias took over the lead the rest of the race. He finished with a fine total of 70+ miles. Jay was 2nd and happy with his race, and Ken McIntyre was 3rd, with over 100km, to win the 60+ age group. Betty Frankum and Jennifer Evans had a close competition for the women's division of the 12 hour run, as shown by their 50 mile splits and total mileages of 59+. Betty set a U.S. track 12 hour record for Women age 60-64, breaking the old mark of 56+ miles set by Dixie Madsen, who also lives in San Diego. Overall the race went very well. Thanks for RD's John Metz and Dave Capron, and all the volunteers who kept us going, and fueled up during the race. Also, I thank my crew: my girlfriend Leslie, and running friends Mark Leisinger and Mary Lou Lackey, for their help and encouragement during the race. I'll write up a more detailed story about my race and the overall experience and send it to the list late in the week. Slowly recovering, Shawn McDonald smcdonal@strubix.com
