Subject: FA50, Western Washington Style From: "Ron Nicholl" Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 06:45:14 -0900 Fat Ass 50, Western Washington Style Tiger Mountain, Issaquah, WA Trails January 5, 2002 50 Km, Two Mountain Loops, 7,400 ' Elevation Gain Uli Steidl set a new course record for the Fat Ass 50, Western Washington Style run held January 5th at Tiger Mountain near Issaquah. His time of 5:10 bettered the course record by 3 minutes. An almost unbelievable time was reported last year that is now being disregarded due to lack of validation. Uli, the past three year winner of the Seattle Marathon has now captured the FA50 record. Krissy Moehl ran a 5:23 and broke Kate King's 1999 record by 16 minutes. Krissy made the course look easy, as she finished with Jim Kerby, another champion of the Tiger trails. This record adds to a growing list of her recent ultra accomplishments. A record number of runners showed up for this "unorganized fun run" on the Tiger Mountain trails. What started in California years ago as a No Entry, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps run, has become an early January tradition around the world. 50 miles or 50 kilometers are run to celebrate a recovery from the over indulgences of the Holidays, hence the name Fat Ass 50. The Tiger route is a difficult double loop with 7,400 feet of elevation gain. Many opt for the single 25 Km loop as enough dispensation for their Holiday indulgences Everyone agreed this year's trail conditions were excellent, not too muddy and just small patches of snow at the higher elevations. The week before trail party consisting of Lynn Yarnall, Karen King, Lary Webster, Tony Covarrubias, Glenn Tachiyama, John Bauer, Jim Boyd, Dan Fraiser, Jamshid Khajavi, Mike Devlin, Cheri and Pete Gillis did an excellent job of marking and clearing trail. Once again, as is the tradition, most of the course was marked with left-over Christmas ornaments. It is always a treat to look up and be greeted with ornamentation at the turns. This year mystery signs of encouragement showed up on the course and were later identified as the contributions of the former women's record holder and her sister. The No Aid aspect of the run is changing. Several years ago Al Schuehle packed in an aid station but lately we have been content with water at the 25K mark. This year Scott Jurek brought Cliff Shots, Terri Rashid chocolate dessert bars and for a first, Ray Gruenewald brought Issaquah's finest, Crispy Creme Donuts. The healthiness of this aid is scary. In the future a second run may have to be held for the over indulgences of the FA 50 itself. Thanks to all who participated and volunteered their time to make the 2002 Fat Ass run the best ever. We look forward to seeing everyone again for an enjoyable romp through the Tiger Trails after next year's Holiday over indulgences. So Ray, do we place our order now? 50 Km Name Time Comment 1.
