The 2009 race took place under perhaps the most challenging weather in the 14 years of the event.
We had 49 no-shows on the morning of the race and a record 60 runners were forced to drop out
along the trail as the hours progressed. Nonetheless, 260 participants rose to meet the challenge
and persevered through drenching rain and high winds along the ridge tops. We heard tales of mud
puddles so deep they had to be swum across, winds so strong that a couple of runners were blown
over and yet – almost every runner had a smile on their face as they crossed that finish line,
with nothing but compliments to the cast of volunteers who stood in the cold and wet for hours to
help these adventurers accomplish their goals. Races like these can be the most memorable because
they require so much of us. We know that we have truly overcome external and internal obstacles
and achieved something personally remarkable.
I hope many of you will come back next year, as runner or volunteer, to see what the stellar Miwok
views really look like.
If you’re just logging onto the site, here’s what the Miwok 100K is about. Be sure to check back
here in September for details on the 2010 15th anniversary of the race. Application will once
again be by lottery.
The 15th anniversary Miwok 100K will take place on the first Saturday in May:
- May 1, 2010 • 5:40 a.m. –
- Rodeo Lagoon (west of Sausalito, CA) –
The Miwok 100K is very hilly (approximately 10,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain) with
spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Tamalpais and the Point Reyes
National Seashore. The course is a modified out-and-back, consisting of mostly fire roads and
single-track trails with approximately five miles on roads. The race is extremely competitive at
the front, a rewarding challenge for the mid-pack and a glorious long day in the forests and
fields for those not in a hurry.
There is a fantastic post-race barbecue, great tech-fabric race shirt and goodie bag with useful,
ultra-specific items from our outstanding sponsors.
Miwok is a lot of fun to run, and volunteering at the race can also be a blast. You meet great
people, help your colleagues, and get food and some great swag, too. It’s also a great way to
learn about ultrarunning and improve your own performance by observing a lot of runners’ pacing
and aid station strategies. Check out the Volunteers link to your left to see what you can do
and send me an e-mail (Miwok100k@gmail.com).
Carpooling will once again be required in order to maintain our permit from the GGNRA.
If you cannot find the answers on this website, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
The Miwok 100K is part of the Montrail Ultra Cup series. If you raced this year, don’t forget to
register - ultracup.montrail.com - and enter your finish time by May 15th, and you'll
automatically receive a community prize, consistent with the number of Ultra Cup races you've
completed. Keep an eye out for an announcement regarding next year's expanded and improved
Montrail Ultra Cup. Thanks for participating.
Look forward to seeing you in May.
